The Lake Coeur d'Alene Porsche Drive

July 21 st , 2007

Just a couple of comments for all of those who missed today's Porsche Drive to the Lake Estate of Chee Chee. The day, and what a nice one it was, began with coffee and donuts (rich and dangerous) at Porsche Liberty Lake. Our thanks therefore to the Porsche management team at Liberty Lake. We do indeed appreciate your hospitality.

To today's drive: The ‘designer' of it (the drive), if I am correct, were Tom Johnson and Kelly Dionne. Thank you so much. Thanks also to all the others who guided us. Although we started together, some of us insisted to opt for a different route to Rockford. Again ‘united' and once on hwy 95 (driving south), we turned left a couple of miles after Worley (from where no Indian attacks to be reported). From thereon it got really exciting. But, despite of the wonderful /picturesque and winding roads all of us loved, we showed incredible discipline, taming those nervous and ready to explode machines. And that included Randy (probably thanks to his co-pilot Dick). President Michael can be proud of this Saturday morning crew. Yes, it is true that some of the participants (I am talking about those who were driving) would not have objected to a slightly more challenging test of their driving skills.

And then there was this beautiful red 356, the one that participated in the Tripoli – Tobruk Rally August 8 th through August 10 th , 1958 . Yes, you read correctly – August 8/10, 1958. What an amazing car this is. A real pleasure watching it how skillfully and with which ease it managed those many turns from Liberty Lake to Chee Chee's Lake Estate. And it is fast as well.

The weather was perfect. A blue and white sky (the colors of Bavaria, Germany, not, unfortunately, of Zuffenhausen), the temperature between 80 and 85 F, moderate traffic, and then, as in years past, there was this most brilliant host. The Italians would have shouted:

Evviva Chee Chee!

We who we were the guests of Chee Chee say many thanks for a wonderful time, for the delicious food and the dangerously good chocolate cake. The setting was ideal and so was the water as a few of us can confirm. Too bad that those marvelous hours move along so fast, or is it us who we just don't take enough time or the will to relax a little bit longer. There always seems to be that next goal, that other commitment. Just remember, life is short!

The unexpected surprise of the day: It belonged to the Hunt brothers, Bruce and David. Bruce decided that brother David, his chief mechanic /strategic advisor when it comes to racing, wasn't allowed to attend a Porsche Party in anything less than a Porsche. So the two went out and bought a Porsche. Give them a few months and this not so young Porsche might look once again almost new. Congratulations to Bruce and David.

Enjoy the summer and see you at the next Porsche event.
